note that I misstated above... this is a WATCH not a WARNING. Material difference in terms which I used improperly. A meteorologist cuffed me up side the head for sloppy language.

then one of the meteorologists called his family and yelled at them to go to the local library for the next 2 hours. Then he explained wave-CISK, derecho, and mesoscale convective storms to me. Weather science is pretty trippy stuff.

you know that XKCD about how all maps become a proxy for population unless we normalize for population? What's the graph equivalent to that cartoon? I suspect we need that here...

Eastern NC / SE VA is under a Tornado Warning... I work with an office of meteorologists and they are literally leaving work to pick up their kids and go to shelter. Schools let out 2 hours early. One meteorologist yelled "holy shit look at that wave-CISK" before bolting

They have been replaced by inexpensive travel and the Internet. Which is awesome! But I feel like my life spans an era that includes the cultural remnants of the 1892 Chicago World's Fair. Robots and space are still really cool though :)

I was reminded today of going to the 1982 World's Fair. I was 9. I feel nostalgic remembering how very excited I was. So much to see from around the world! Robots! Space! Complicated feelings thinking back on how things have changed. There are no longer World Fairs...

There’s an insurance company focused on the industrial hemp (non-THC) market. I’m surprised this didn’t sprout up earlier, tbh. It’s been about a year (or two?) since the feds clarified the rules around interstate commerce of industrial hemp.

Knowledge is understanding statistical base rates. Wisdom is knowing that sometimes you’ll appear like you’re ok with inequality if you casually mention the base rate as a given.

Ooopsie... now a huge amount of mass that was assumed to be moving randomly is now moving in sync. Financial markets do this too. Panics and manias ensue.

This problem happens in physical systems too. Good example is the Millennium Bridge in London. Designers never expected everyone on the bridge to all move at the same time. But after a wind gust caused the bridge to wiggle, everyone stepped the other direction at the same time.

Unless there's a system disruption that forces everyone to log back in. Like, say, a certificate expiring. Some folks are able to log back post event. But many can't. Probably some combination of volume of log ins as well as certificate propagation which can't be instant.

I don't have any inside information, but knowing a thing or two about how systems fail I think we can guess a few things. Most engineers would never design a system to allow every user to authenticate at the same time. That's overkill. Because users never all log in at once...

This is a good example of owning your f-up. Thank you Microsoft. Now be sure and put an outlook reminder in for the next one.

I was thinking about how different groupings of data in effect form a DAG. And SQL does groupings so how might I map DAG ideas on SQL groupings? I googled and Microsoft’s “Database Availiability Groups (DAG)” ensure that the results are useless to my problem :(

Should you put high achievers in the same classroom? Not if your goal is improving learning. Interesting research out of West Point!
