Nominal wage growth slowed to 0.3% in December, falling to 4.6% annually. In 2022, the narrative of wages driving high inflation was not true in the American economy. Corporations continued to set record-high profits, while workers continued to struggle.

The U.S. economy must systematically change to close racial gaps in the labor market. Investments in paid family & medical leave and child care would both allow more women of color to participate in the labor market & expand career pathways.

Despite a global pandemic, the United States remains the only OECD country without universal paid sick leave. With no paid sick leave and no child care, working families have no choice but to miss work hours, lose paychecks, & erode productivity growth.

Even more striking, workers with low incomes are less likely to have any paid sick leave. Since low-paying jobs are disproportionately held by Black & workers of color due to historical occupational segregation, policies continue to perpetuate racial disparities.
