Today we had a in the hole, and a fish in the zooplankton net. Almost the entire ecosystem, except the top predator... yet

really brings me back to where my life on sea ice started 10 years ago at : Today we measured strength with a Borehole Jack from

After moving operations from yesterday to today due to windchills down to -59°C, we were deploying sediment traps with the again. Unfortunately one had to be sacrificed to Neptune.

The difficulty of today’s expeditions does not lie in the harsh environmental conditions, but rather in the interaction between the people involved.

When he realized, that he won't drift to the pole, went North by skis. As we likely passed our northernmost point, we did the same ... As we are already 150km further north than he ever reached, we only walked for 1 hour and camped only 1 night to test our survival

After a rather calm week mostly in heated rooms (ROV cabin & ship) it was about time for more ridge drilling: 5 holes through up to 6m thick

As todays 6,5h multibeam survey didn't show exciting pictures, here comes a polar cod from saturday. They are easy to observe with the but the fish people have not caught a single one yet.

Today we deployed some harps... No not Orchestra Instruments, just more science gear measuring a vertical profile of light, salinity and temperature within the seaice.

When hightech meets traditional lowtech: Using our ROV to read ablation stakes from the underside.

Successful deployment of a Sediment trap by under "our" pressure ridge about 150m away from our access hole. Let's see if we get it back :-)

4 hours of bearguarding my colleagues in -45° windchill. One can see amazingly far without headlamp due to the but it is getting cold after some time.

This is my office: The Site on the floe. Power hub, control cabin and ROV tent. Inside it is well heated for the sensitive electronics and the ROV operators that sit there for up to 7 hours.

Even though we would love to work on the ice everyday, we also have to stay in to catch up with the data we create: Here comes the first map of our floe from below. Icethickness (draft) derived from .

Another great day: 2 zooplankton net tows, a successful test sediment trap deployment and a first ever 200m horizontal fishing line deployment between the CTD and ROV holes.

If you are a scientist and ever ask colleagues to use or deploy your instruments in the field, please make the biggest possible effort to prepare things well. Everything that can be done at home should be ready; Equipment should be easy to handle, reliable and robust. Also min

Flying in the dark: Just in time before the new year, we managed to aqcuire ~500x200m data from 20m depth. This included level , as well as the ridge site.

is back in business! First test dive out of the new site today! We got a ridge with 10m draft close by.

12 days after the rushed recovery from the ice due to forming cracks, the is back on the ice and slowly getting ready for diving. At temperatures around -30°C and windchill down to -45°C relocation was a major undertaking

Christmas evening allowed for a short outing in the spirit of early explorers. After a successful work day, we ventured out on our ice floe by skis. We enjoyed the crisp starry sky and the unique sound of a cold snow cover.
