Before #WWII, US didn’t have military, intel, or colonial interests outside Western Hemisphere requiring a large-scale effort to protect clandestine operations. Security & counterintelligence ops had been undertaken as needed by @FBI, @USArmy’s G-2 branch, & Office of Naval Intel

Early in
#WWII, British began supplying#OSS with extensive information about foreign military, espionage, & sabotage activities, the most sensitive of which came from ULTRA—decrypted intercepts of German military messages sent with the Enigma machine.pic.twitter.com/GxHPL4ca71

Due to volume of traffic & need for compartmentalization, Brits insisted
#OSS set up a separate, extra-secure component to handle material. So, Donovan created the Counterintelligence Division in the Secret Intelligence Branch, which conducted espionage operations in war zones.Show this thread -
As the CI Division’s work grew along with the need for the
#OSS to build counterintelligence networks of its own, on June 15, 1943, Donovan reconfigured it into a branch-level office called X-2. In September, the main X-2 Branch office moved from New York to Washington.Show this thread -
By 1945, X-2 had amassed hundreds of thousands of files on foreign espionage & sabotage that included the identities of foreign agents & firms used as cover by hostile services. Units within X-2 addressed specific CI functions.

Watch List Unit monitored mail & written comms for names & cover names of enemy agents. Insurance Unit monitored Axis intel ops carried out under insurance cover. Art Looting Investigation Unit tracked records of stolen art & jewelry as a means of tracking German officers.pic.twitter.com/RtyAoM1Gyp

In the field, X-2 operated its own comms channels & field bases. X-2 also had clandestine liaison relationships w services in liberated France, Belgium, Holland, Denmark & Norway. X-2 Branch’s
#WWII successes informed CIA’s approach to counterintelligence. http://bit.ly/2F3Lp4bShow this thread

The CIA, from it's very inception, had in its ranks Nazi spies imported from Germany and Russia. https://www.cia.gov/library/readingroom/docs/CIA%20AND%20NAZI%20WAR%20CRIM.%20AND%20COL.%20CHAP.%201-10,%20DRAFT%20WORKING%20PAPER_0010.pdf … qanon The Great Awakening.

Donovan did more than just create CI div, he is also one who sent teams for overseas wet work but those files are still classified and a lot of info was left out of official records or deliberately not filed- "less you know, less you can compromise" - dates back to his times

Dry cleaning? Interesting are the tactics to identify and evade someone following you on foot. In Wash. D. C., used an around-the-corner fake to spot a follower at Union Station: the person immediately turned around and retreated. Pickpocket, perhaps? Thankfully, will never know.
