Barry served this nation around the globe & thrived on the pressure & scope of his responsibilities no matter where he was.

Summer 1992: having just returned a few months earlier from Asia, Barry volunteered for temporary assignment in Central America.

On July 19, Barry & other CIA employees were @ a beach when one of them was pulled out to sea by a rip current.

Barry & his colleague saw their coworker was in trouble &, w full knowledge of the risk to themselves, swam out to rescue her.

Barry reached the drowning woman first, calmed her & encouraged her to conserve energy by floating & not fighting the current.

Barry’s colleague arrived & was able to help the drowning woman back to shore.

But, Barry had exhausted his own energy while helping & didn’t have the strength to fight his way through the currents to shore.

He left behind a wife, 4½-month-old son, his sister, & his parents.
