I believe he won TWO Academy Awards... other than the Midway picture, he won one for a short documentary.
Ford was at Midway because he asked Admiral Nimitz's intelligence officer, Eddie Layton if he should go.
Layton knew that a big battle was coming, and told Ford to go. So Ford got the Academy Award thanks to codebreaking and Naval Intelligence
