Bill joined CIA on June 14,1951, as an intelligence assistant assigned to the East European Division. He was 21 years old.

Bill recruited & trained East European refugees to gather intelligence & disrupt & destabilize East European Communist regimes.

1953: Bill entered Agency-sponsored military basic training
1954: He went to East Asia as ops officer & paramilitary specialist

Early June 1956: Bill sent to Mediterranean Sea area as Ops Officer. He started establishing operational & political contacts.

On June 16, 1956, after working late Bill stopped at a café & took a seat at a small table near the front door.

2 young boys appeared in doorway & hurled 2 bombs, both landing under Bill’s table. He caught the full force of the blasts.

3 weeks later, a letter arrived at American Consulate titled “Tragic Mistake” signed by the leader of a local terrorist group.

Letter explained the bombs were meant for British officials, not Americans. Bill was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time
