CIA #Museum Artifact of the Week: FBIS Text Message Announcing Yugoslavian President Tito's Death http://bit.ly/2tGQDdk pic.twitter.com/kMXV9pEx88

A misleading description. FBIS would have filed the *announcement* of Tito's death from Belgrade radio or Tanjug news agency. This report, from Bucharest radio, was filed to show analysts the exact wording and tone of how the media of neighbouring countries reported the news.

Note (on fourth line) that this item was sent at P ("Priority") Precedence. This was the 3rd level in the ZOPR Precedence scale used by FBIS at the time. The first report of Tito's death would have been sent at Z ("Flash") Precedence.

Item's serial number (known in FBIS as the BFN - Bureau File Number) - AU041917 - means it was dispatched by FBIS Vienna (AUstria) bureau at 1917 GMT on 4th of the month. 1917 was 17 minutes after the news bulletin started (news of Tito's death might not have been the lead item).

Note also that recipients of this message included "LD", "BBC" and "DW" - i.e. FBIS's LD (London) Bureau (actually at Caversham Park), BBC Monitoring (or Monitoring Service as it was then called) and Deutsche Welle (with whom FBIS and BBCM had an exchange agreement).

I was a military brat, part of a ski club, skiing in Yugoslavia right before Tito died. It made for a tense trip, but an experience I will always remember.

My father was a career Marine. When I was about to be born, he was stationed at the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade as the NCO in charge. My mother was sent to Germany to have me, but we promptly returned to Belgrade when we lived for two and half more years.

Analyst 1: "He did stir the pot in Greece and killed a number of US and NATO servicemen, as well as assassinating people in the West willy-nilly..." Analyst 2: "But the Tito-Stalin Split! He deserved Marshall Plan money! Look how we turned Ceausescu!"

"Text Message"....? LOL. Well, I suppose it is. A little more context on the old wireless transmission technology might be helpful.
