This is bad. The problem for me is not the desire to enforce contemporary social norms. The problem is the severity of the punishment and the complete lack of compassion. Force someone to resign? There are other ways to show social disapproval.

Perhaps a warning would be nice.

It is not surprising the university would act this way. During my tenure at UCI from 2010-2013, there were far more graduate students (in the humanities) who conceived of themselves as activists first and scholars second, which is why many of them failed to be scholars.

Not enough info here. Did she ever ask him to refrain?
-
In the article, she says she did not...over the course of 28 years.
-
Then it’s BS.

The witch trials have begun. On a side note how do an Assistant Dean and a Dept Chairwoman claim a power differential?
-
I was wondering the same thing.

Why did she put up with it for 28 years if it bothered her? Why didn’t she say I don’t like that? She’s a dead for crying out loud. It’s not like he threatened her job. We are infantilizing women. True feminists are rolling in their graves.

I mean he sounds pretty creepy. But can’t we please have a proportional response?
-
I'm Italian. To me anybody who has no bidet in the bathroom is creepy. Everybody is creepy in its own way, just negotiate our relationships between each other in an adult way...

Latin culture a kiss on the cheek is customary. I've known men from Spn, Venezuela, and Peru. They truly mean to compliment women when talking about beauty. Fact they felt they couldn't ask him to shake their hand instead is a Joke. This is a cultural difference, not harassment
-
Now the sliding of hands up and down a woman is another matter. But, you can accidentally jab your stiletto into his foot. That’s what those shoes are for.
-
Think you mean alleged sliding. If true he didn't do it while hugging. He would of had to do it post hug or initial greet. I don't like hugs, yet I've had female coworkers side their hands up & down my back. It just took me saying politely I'm not a fan. No foot stomping required

I noticed the other day that I no longer give compliments to women. I say hello, ok, thank you. I don't respond when I'm told to have a good night or day, just seems like any response to that can be miscontrued. This movement is dreadful soul sucking nihilistic at it's core.

This European cultural norm is not allowed? At any point, she couldn’t have said, “please Don’t “?
