Congrats to for being the first one to correctly guess the location of Venus! Venus is sitting on the Ikua Purdy Statue which is in front of the Parker Ranch center. Ikua Purdy was a famous paniolo who attended Frontier Days in Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1908.

We are starting a new series in 2020 called Summit Talk! In this series we will be showing different aspects of the observatory. We start off with Mary Beth Laychak in the front lobby of the summit. It was a windy day up there! Tune in each month for a new video!

The January image of the month is of the Dolphin Nebula. This planetary nebula is located in Cassiopeia. Contrary to the nebula description, a planetary nebula has nothing to do with planets but is instead a less violent end to a star's life. Credit: CFHT/ Coelum

When working up that high every tool has to be tied off so nothing falls on sensitive equipment or the mirror below. Each person also has wear a harness that is tied to the cage to make sure they stay safe when working 5 stories up.

The crane is operated from blue cab next to the cage which allows for precise placement of the cage so the technicians can safely access any of the upper end of the telescope.

For today’s we are talking about the dome crane. It rides up to the top of the dome carrying instruments or people for work at the top of the telescope. Here it carried up one of our engineers in the red cage for a quick fix on Megacam.

Exchange day! Megcam is heading on the telescope for its first observations of 2020. This is our first exchange since mid December. We were sidelined due to technical issues, but thanks to the tireless efforts of our staff, specifically our operations group, we’re back on sky!

RT : The field and three others likes it were observed every three nights to detect faint supernova, probing dark energy that is responsible for the accelerating expansion of the Universe. Over 500 supernova were discovered over those 5 years.
