Identification of #polio in NYC wastewater highlights the importance of vaccination. Those unvaccinated & incompletely vaccinated are at risk. Vaccination is critically important, especially for those in the affected community & areas where the virus has been found in wastewater.

Everyone with hepatitis C should have access to lifesaving treatment. Although an effective hepatitis C treatment is available, too few people with hepatitis C are treated. Removing the barriers to treatment is critical.

Vaccination is an important tool in preventing the spread of #monkeypox. Avoiding behaviors that increase risk of exposure is important between the 1st & 2nd doses of vaccine. Temporary changes in sexual activity will help slow the spread of monkeypox until adequately protected.

From data on cases in the U.S. reported to CDC through July 22, 2022: ➡️99% occurred in men. ➡️94% reported male-to-male sexual contact. ➡️Among monkeypox cases in men who reported their sexual partners in the 3 weeks before symptom onset, the majority had multiple partners.

Today, HHS declared a public health emergency in response to the current #monkeypox outbreak. This means CDC and state & local health departments can take critical actions more quickly and better meet the demands of this outbreak.

#Monkeypox testing has significantly increased from 500 specimens tested each week in late May to nearly 8,000 specimens tested last week. Laboratories can perform 80,000 tests each week, which is much more than the current demand.

I toured Uganda’s National Public Health Emergency Operations Center. With CDC support, Uganda’s PHEOC has coordinated responses to anthrax, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, yellow fever, & others, to contain them at their source.

Since the first U.S. case of monkeypox was confirmed on May 18, this administration has acted swiftly to order & distribute vaccines and increase availability of testing & treatments. We’re heading into August with more tools at our disposal – with the goal to end this outbreak.
