May the kid from Scranton meet the kid from ! So proud of my friend, and now the first Latino US Senator from the State of California, Alex Padilla! A symbol of hope for our generation, and for all children of immigrants who grew up - and are growing up - like us.

This year working moms had to choose btwn their careers or their families. In Aug, the Council passed my motion w/ to provide $30M to low-income families struggling w/ child care costs. 2020 made clear: "other countries have social safety nets. The US has women."

1 in 5 American women have lost their jobs because of . The collapse of the child care sector along with virtual schooling has driven millions of mothers out of the workforce. We need to support child care providers and establish more progressive work-family policies.

We saw what happened with the roll out for COVID-19 testing — wealthier communities had access while poorer, typically communities of color faced greater barriers. We can't let this happen again with the vaccine. Wealth does not make one life more valuable than the next.

Honorable work deserves honorable pay. Angelenos recognize the sacrifice & risk essential workers take on our behalf. Their pay should match the indispensable service they provide. That's why my colleagues & I introduced this motion yesterday.

As we know, the inequities in our city are more visible than ever, but so are the hope and potential of this city. The months ahead must set the stage for the kind of rebirth that can only happen in a city like ours.

While this is a holiday season unlike any other, we still have things to be grateful for. We will go into this holiday season thinking about those that are struggling, remembering them in the work that we will continue to do.

COVID has brought us desperation, despair, and death. Before 2021 we’re looking at a real possibility of 10,000 deaths in the County of LA. 10,000 families who will be without a parent, a sibling, a child.  Who will go into the holidays with an empty seat at their dinner table.

Colleagues, we need to do more. COVID has brought us so much loss. Families have lost their businesses, their jobs, and some have lost all hope. They are starving, waiting up to 2 hours in modern day bread lines for food that might last them a week.

We close out this year in a fiscal crisis, and for all our efforts to adjust and respond, for all the sacrifices we are asking of our workers, and our residents… We demand that the federal government act now to save lives and provide meaningful relief to our residents.

Real allies aren’t here to fix people’s problems for them. They are here to empower them to do it for themselves. True allyship is about respecting, supporting, and standing BEHIND the people who are fighting for themselves, not in front of them.

A real people’s movement is about demanding respect. Demanding Racial Justice. Demanding Environmental Justice. Demanding Social Justice.
