    Thread. For a community that started experiencing another pandemic exactly 40 years ago, also featuring malicious government neglect, the last 16 months have been A LOT. 💔

    Images of the outside of an airmail envelope with an Israeli postmark, and the first paragraph of the type-written letter it contained. The address on the envelope is “Howard Berger & Mark Bieber, Congregation Beth Simchat Torah, box 1270, General Post Office, New York, United States.” Part of the address is covered by the image of the letter text. The text of the letter is transcribed in the tweet thread.
    …describing symptoms that his doctors in Israel could not understand. This is the earliest reference in our archives to HIV affecting CBST, and the first document in the HIV/AIDS chapter in the book “Changing Lives; Making History,” documenting CBST’s history. (text follows) 2/6

At the top it says “The New York Times, Friday July 3, 1981.” The title line reads: “Rare Cancer Seen in 41 Homosexuals.” The next line (in smaller print) reads: “Outbreak Occurs Among Men in New York and California - 8 Died Inside 2 Years.” Under this is the writer’s name, “Lawrence K. Altman.” Only the first lines of the article itself are visible, reading: “Doctors in New York and California have diagnosed among homosexual men 41 cases of a rare and often rapidly fatal form of cancer.
