With all this goodwill upfront so far, it will be almost impossible for the US to demand more action from North Korea without being seen to offer tangible concessions on it's part upfront. Korea is winning so far.

While releasing hostages is a show of good will. Don't forget that they released a vegetable last time, who died the next day. The demand of the US is denuclearization. In that regard, North Korea hasn't made any concessions yet. What it can expect is a show of good will.
-
I hear you. But I wonder..Is demanding denuclearization a demand that the USA (or any other country) can/should make of (e.g.)Korea and Iran? Doesn't/shouldn't the UN have more universal legitimacy? And shouldn't 'responsible use' be a more practical goal to pursue?
-
The UN is an ineffectual body, it is good for international debate, but not much else. It's proven that throughout it's history. Who enforces the UN's demands? The UN Peacekeepers? No, the United States and her allies have traditionally done that. Cutting out the middle man.
-
It's ineffectiveness is a direct result of the stagnation that is born of the structural and decision making inequality/hierarchy that exists... veto powers being the culprit. And USA going rogue isn't enforcement. We need to reform the UN , not circumvent/ abandon it.
-
The veto powers are only a part of UNSC, with the 5 members with veto power being UK, France, Russia, China, and USA. The interests of these nations are radically different and in opposition at times. These are still the world's foremost military powers today. It makes sense.
-
Why would you want to be forced to commit your nation's military for UN enforcement if it goes against your interests? The other nations won't contribute anything. Should these nations not have more say, since they have more skin in the game?

The world ideal should be like a family..that you bring in more income does not give you more right in managing the kids or make you a better parent. That We may not achieve that ideal doesn't mean we shouldn't work trying to.
