I don't know, he must of felt his life was on the line... He probably mistook the animal's tiny claws as a gun, or maybe bcz the animal was brown, or maybe this was his way of contributing to police brutality... *Sigh* US police are yet again incompetent... No shame just a farce

Yep, those tiny claws were probably shiny, and you know how cops react when they see someone has something shiny in their hand.

As a former law enforcement officer I admit this is odd. You can make an argument for using deadly force against a dog due to size/speed. A groundhog is harder to explain. You have your asp baton, pepper spray, ect. Discharging your weapon means a full investigation regardless why
-
It had rabies. Groundhogs are extremely skiddish, they live and hide in the ground. It doesn’t approach potential predators. If an animal had rabies, as a LOE, would you shoot it?

I'm not, but, I know what ground hogs normally do. I know how they react to people / bigger animals. I know this isn't normal. I know that rabid animals approach you without fear. I know rabies is dangerous. I know rabies kills. I know this was a good decision by the officer.

1) This isn't a dog that has an instinct to protect property. It is a ground hog. 2) Ground hogs who don't have rabies, run away from people, wind, anything... they literally hide in the ground. 3) This officer had a good view, probably saw it frothing. He made the right call.
