Looks like it may have had rabies from the way it was acting
-
Groundhogs don't move towards people unless sick.
-
Have you seen an animal with rabies up close? I have. They don't charge/chase people. It's not like Stephen King's 'Cujo' That groundhog wasn't acting strangely.
-
I have seen those in later stages that were lethargic and others which were not. What would you have done in officer's shoes if suddenly charged the same as in the video and trying to protect yourself or the public from an animal of unknown health status?
-
The cop shouldn't have put himself in that situation.
-
The cop could have done a lot of different situations it could have gotten its vehicle close the animal to rev the engine to scare It Off, he could have gotten a an object to Shield himself from the animal to move it or he should have waited till Wildlife officers came

That behavior was untypical of a groundhog. it was a sick groundhog and he painlessly put it out of it's misery and helped stop the spread of distemper or rabies. Good job
-
Except the officer had to shoot it twice because the first shot didn't kill it, so it was in pain. Not so good a job.
-
Damn, gotta go back to groundhog shooting school again. Good call on your part

No reason to shoot the groundhog! What is wrong with trigger happy people?
-
Not common behavior for these animals. It likely had rabies, making it aggressive. The only thing to do is to shoot it, so that it doesn't harm someone, or spread the disease to other critters, like a family pet. Attempting to catch the animal would have been risky.
-
Are you some sort of groundhog expert by chance?

-
Exactly. Because this IS usual behavior. We shooed 1 off the rd just 2 days ago! It's the time of year-they're all over! We had trouble because he kept coming over and wanted to play w/us & there was NOTHING wrong w/him. Animals are used to us now that we've invaded their spaces.
-
Umm, no. Have one living under neighbors porch. It runs, when humans come out, to the safety of its burrow. When there is a bunch of them, they become destructive like Tree Rats, aka Squirrel. Seen them all the time growing up, common behavior is to run away.
-
He had a gun and wanted to use. He didn't need to shoot the fucking thing.
-
It was almost to the grass!!! This is so awful. It’s not okay to kill an animal because we think it might be sick. Seeing it suffer was heartbreaking..that cop is a psycho trigger happy a@@hole!
