Socialism works great, until you run out of other people's money

Your comment has nothing to do with UBI. Milton Friedman wasn't a socialist. Neither was Friedrich Hayek. Both supported UBI.https://medium.com/basic-income/if-you-think-basic-income-is-free-money-or-socialism-think-again-4a17e8d15b1 …

Ive read on the same idea, giving someone on their 50th birthday one million dollars, but you have to build new house, buy new car & use money wisely with your age. Same concept
-
No. We are not talking about a million dollars. We are talking about around $1000 per month as a secure floor that any amount can be earned on top of. We are also talking about replacing welfare and tax subsidies, and we're recognizing the realities of automation.
-
Someone getting $1000 ,makes it hard for the one not getting the $1000 , to get up for work when he looks across the street & sees no activity
-
Everyone gets the $1000, so those earning $2000 end up with a total of $3000.
-
But who doesn't get $1000 is my question, who decides when this stops ? Everyone gets $1000 ? Who pays
-
Yes, everyone gets it. But that doesn't mean everyone ends up with more income. For example, say we pay for it with a new 10% VAT. Those spending less than $120k would be net receivers. Those spending more than $120k would be net payers. Get it?https://medium.com/basic-income/the-cost-of-universal-basic-income-is-the-net-transfer-amount-not-the-gross-price-tag-acb8aa5eab73 …

A UBI hands out money to everyone, regardless of whether they actually need it or not. That is unnecessary, wasteful & unfair, because it means that those who have are being given even more, at the taxpayers' expense! Better to focus the help on those who really need it because
-
Yes everyone gets UBI, but the net effect is not to provide extra to those who have plenty. This can be confusing to understand but hopefully this helps you. It should also replace tax credits for the rich that already don't make sense to provide.https://medium.com/basic-income/the-cost-of-universal-basic-income-is-the-net-transfer-amount-not-the-gross-price-tag-acb8aa5eab73 …

Basic income works. Intrinsic motivation means that given the means, people will pursue what they are passionate about and good at--their talent. When people pursue their talents the world becomes a brighter place for everyone. Threat of starvation is not a good motivator 4 work.

There are a lot of misconceptions about what UBI is, and there are a lot of questions people frequently ask about it. Here's a FAQ to help.http://www.scottsantens.com/basic-income-faq …

It’s not going into their savings. It’ll go to a new car payment, furniture payment... etc. people are just bad at saving money, it’s a symptom of our consume and want everything now culture.
-
People who have no money to save can't save money. This is to meet expenses and live. Not to pump into an ira. Althoughh if they didddd pump some of it into an ira it would save us hundreds of thousands later when theyre retirement age. If someone was smart enough to know that.

This will be absolutely necessary globally once the automation reaches the tipping point and replaces most of the work force. We are stuck in the old paradigm thinking that jobs in their traditional form will outlive machines/AI
-
I don't like this common response, because it ignores that automation ALREADY HAS eliminated most of the jobs that actually need to be done, which is why society already has had to create a bunch of pointless jobs like so many marketing and advertising jobs, plus poverty jobs.
-
It has replaced a lot of manual work, but it will continue replacing much more, in fact, most of what we call jobs
-
I know. It's just that portraying job destruction due to technology as something that is completely in the future is problematic, and largely because it allows opponents of basic income to counter that new jobs are always created, which is indeed true but part of the problem.
