Fracking or fault line?
-
I think it's likely a combination of the two, dependent on the uplift from drought, and recent rainfall (water weight induced seismic activity) as to the location and severity of each shock. Look at the 4.6 quake in San Antonio, TX that followed Harvey. (http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/rare-4-6-magnitude-earthquake-strikes-san-antonio-texas-article-1.965025 …).
-
Sudden changes in rainfall causes changes in weight distribution on existing faultlines and that may effect a seismic response. We don't know where all the deep faults are, and better mapping is needed for secondary and tertiary faults.
-
didn't know rainfall affected fault lines
-
Yes sir, it does. Water is water and whether in a riverbed or not, it has weight. Couple this with the fact that many riverbeds actually have faults that run beneath them and the picture becomes much clearer. Have you seen New Madrid? one of the worst earthquakes in Modern United States History was in New Madrid, MO and one of the oldest American Fault Lines, thus the New Madrid Fault line. My comment wasn't to downgrade you, I was surprised.
-
I travel from central Illinois to south of New Madrid, Mo occasionally. I think about the fault every time I'm on the bridge over the Mississippi.

This is another warning shot for everyone whose state may be thinking of allowing fracking. Oklahoma has witnessed a huge increase in eq's.
