A man believed to be mentally ill was shot at ten times by NYPD officers in Brooklyn and died. Officers say he was pointing at pedestrians with an object that looked like a gun, while family and neighbors say he was "harmless." https://cbsn.ws/2GSGWkX pic.twitter.com/XhCn2kAoOp

From that video, what are people supposed to believe? I would’ve thought he was shooting them. You can’t expect police to figure this out on the fly. It’s a shame he is dead.

Maybe the cop should have checked with the "family and neighbors" first ! Split second decisions ....the cop did the right thing and color doesn't matter !

So disarming him was not an option? Shooting him ten times was the ONLY choice they had? Bullshit.

I can definitely see why the mistakes were made.. Maybe if others weren't shooting anyone who moves in an unexpected way, this would be chalked up to tragic accident. Someone equip cops' vehicles with a pair of binoculars + some refresher training each year

I saw a news clip about behavioral psychologists providing de-escalation training to police and body cam evidence of the benefits. Turning sirens off on approach, backing up away from subjects, only one officer engaging while backing away...It made a huge difference for everyone.

I am sorry, but when someone points an object that looks like a gun, and assumes a gun stance position, I don’t care what his racial or mental status is, I just also assume that he is dangerous! Especially lately, that is the atmosphere now,

Sure looks like a gun .... I wonder if a family member who said he’s harmless how they’d feel if a stranger was running up to them pointing an object which looked like a gun?

This should not be news! If something so similar to a gun is pointed your way the very last thing you would do as a police officer is hesitate. Period. That officer deserves to go home at the end of his shift. Period.

Family should be partially to blame for not keeping an eye on him. What if it was a real gun? Just stand there and let him kill you? Cops have to make split second decisions....
