To address the rising epidemic of opioid overdose deaths, advocates are taking a page from the war on Big Tobacco by suing to make drug manufacturers financially liable. http://cbsn.ws/2HI6xKO pic.twitter.com/yBGMc4TfaW

I suffer from very painful chronic disease. Been on opioids for yrs. I could get high every day had I chose to but DIDN’T bc I need them to treat real pain. Those that ABUSE them CHOOSE to ABUSE them! NO ONE FORCED them to. Now govt takes them away from patients like me. WRONG !!

Professor D. Ausness @ukcollegeoflaw - When sugar starts killing people in unprecedented numbers then we can have the discussion about suing sugar companies. Please educate yourself on addiction & pharma deceptively marketing highly addictive painkillers.

How about personal accountability? Take it only if prescribed to you & as directed. And if a doc is over prescribing, he should be held accountable for his part.

Don't forget those patients that actually need these medications. They aren't abusers. They need the medications to survive the pain they deal with every day. They should not be punished for those that choose to abuse. How about reports on real patients? @CNN @MSNBC @FoxNews

How about those who live daily in pain, who can’t get a Dr. to prescribe painkillers because they are afraid of being sued or have their license lifted because of the opioid crisis, who CAN’T afford to sue!

What about the epidemic of alcohol that and smoking both kill more the opioids and ruin way more families

Those are tragedies too. But overdoses are the leading cause of death for those under age 50. It has killed more than the Vietnam War & AIDS crisis combined.

Over 600,000 people in US die per yr from tobacco and alcohol! That doesn’t count the effects on their families. Should we expect EVERYONE give up drinking & smoking bc SOME have problems? Chronic pain patients are suffering inhumanly bc SOME people ABUSE opioids. Is that right?

Pls ✔ stats. E.g. CDC website. Many forms of addiction include cigs & alcohol. There isn't one solution dealing with addiction. Tobacco didn't stop deceptive practices until they were sued & hit them in their pockets. https://addiction.surgeongeneral.gov/

The CDC also relied on a report from Dr Kolodny that is very flawed. He grouped those in pain management who follow very strict rules, (monthly pill counts & random UAs) with abusers of illicit heroin, fentanyl & lethal combos w/Xanax. We are NOT the abusers but he doesn’t care!

Addicts are so often challenged by personal accountability. The last thing they need is to blame Evil Old Big Pharma for addiction troubles.

Drug manufactures do not make people take drugs. It's the people's choice. If they are not intelligent enough to make logical choices, that is their problem.

Why the fuck would the manufacturers be liable? Maybe start with the doctors overprescribing it to obvious crackheads.
