Someone should tell Trump about the horrific, systematic abuse of patients in all those asylums that were shut down. Many of whom didn't even need to be institutionalized.

On one hand it was pre 1980s poor standard of care. Reagan in his tax cuts closed these facilities, leaving mentally ill people to fend for themselves: hence homeless. Mental health care in America gets little funding. Facilities get even less.
-
Right. I'm not saying that our solution of replacing those institutions with *absolutely nothing* was a roaring success. But most of these folks can be treated with outpatient care and therapy.
-
The whole linking together of mental illness and mass shootings is wildly misleading. The main reason we want to keep guns away from the mentally ill is to prevent suicide, not homicide. The mentally ill are not more likely to be violent.
-
Mental Illness is too broad a term. There are specific kinds of mental illnesses that contribute to violence. We need to know them and act on them when we see them. Intense Habitual Anger over Perceived Betrayal Against Multiple Targets to name just one.
-
Apparently, it's predominantly whatever kind of mental illness that affects men. It also makes them abuse women, children, and animals. Women have a slightly higher rate of [diagnosed] mental illness but a significantly lower rate of mass murders.
-
I don’t necessarily agree and don’t wish this to be a debate. Perhaps the it’s not as high profile, but plenty of mentally ill women commit attacks of stabbing, clubbings and the harm the can inflict on the children they raise can never be measured. Equally detrimental.
-
I did say mass murders.

word salad just word salad.

Word salad from a man who made it easier for someone with mental illness to buy a gun. Interesting how they're not wanting to release the photo of that signing.

Let’s all thank Ronald Regan administration for the demise of these institutions that served the mentally ill. The influx of mentally ill homelessness rose once that administration closed those avenues. Sadly our government never put a thing in place to better the situation.

Those institutions were rampant with human right abuses. 1 nurse to 25 people. They were treated like garbage. The disability rights community do not want them back.
-
Yes there were problems, budget, short staff, etc. but the streets are not where the lost individuals should reside because the system had flaws.
-
The problems were the human right abuses.
-
No it was definitely a plan by king Ronnie. He even stated they would develop community based options and of course families would step in and take care of all those schizophrenics and veterans with PTSD. Because he cared so much. Thanks king Ronnie.

what are you even talking about...
-
I’m talking about Ronald regan closing mental health institutions...which clueless dotard complained about, oblivious to the fact while trying to blame mental illness for a massacre. Providing cover for his masters the NRA.
