District officials in this school district have removed "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" from the required reading list because of racial slurs in the books http://cbsn.ws/2C5gbmS pic.twitter.com/JOSvb8eEdo

This is a district close by....I understand those concerned, but if taught and discussed correctly, wouldn't it be a great learning experience?

Then they missed the damn point that both Mark Twain and Harper Lee were trying to teach.

Since when do we ban literature, slap a warning on it like they do for movies *inappropriate language*. Kids hear worse language listening to Rap.

I don’t promote the use of racial slurs but I do promote that the inhuman ways African Americans were treated needs to be taught. The Civil Rights Act was signed just 50 yrs ago not 150 yrs ago. It can’t be brushed under the rug.

We've gotten to the point of school districts being the censure for us & our children? If you don't want to read it, don't. If you want to be amazed by American literature, read on & be amazed. If you are easily offended by era verbiage, then stay away from Twitter, Instagram...

Over time, books that were progressive in their day, become reflections of what they sought to criticize. The price of progress.
