.@krisvancleave on train crash: This is a circumstance that had positive train control on those tracks and if it was working properly, this accident should not have happened. There is technology mandated by Congress, but the installation has been delayed. http://cbsn.ws/2DZvgbi pic.twitter.com/VMxOKR3qxS

Congress is milk toast. They are totally dysfunctional. Congressional mandates mean nothing. The sanctions against Russia are a prime example.

That's not accurate. Congress in 2015 caved to the rail industry and pushed the deadline back. Wasn't a Trump Administration decision.

You are accurate Congress did cave in 2015. Trump caved further by naming Mitch McConnell wife Elaine Chow as secretary of Transportation. Bad, very bad indeed.

Not that this would go anywhere or is even legal, but maybe the Families of victims in these recent train accidents can file a lawsuit (civil) against @SpeakerRyan @PRyan @SenateMajLdr @GOP to see why they continually allowed Train/rail companies to delay safety regulations!

Since my mother in law was murdered by an illegal alien can I sue President Obama? Or Governor Brown? Seriously, three people have died in train wrecks this year. How many hundred’s of people have to die for you to care about illegal immigration?

"Positive train controls" not in place yet? Isn't that the same excuse cited for the #PointDefianceBypass train derailment in Washington state; Dec. 2017? #Deregulation is a featured policy of #Trump admin. Prepare for a veritable wild west show with less #safety in America.

Weren’t there some extensions granted to that deadline though? And weren’t there political reasons for some of that?

Yes. It's a real shame that such highly effective safety engineering, now so timely, was so delayed. BTW, I should've been clearer. I'm not blaming #Trump's "deregulation happy" admin entirely for these failures but it's likely to not improve in next 3yrs.

Who actually controls that section of track? CSX or Amtrak? Lets start with some basics. Positive control is nice but it really addresses a symptom and not the problem.

OK. So now the next question is why did their traffic management system fail? They are the equivalent of Air Traffic Control. Positive control is like aircraft proximity warning signals. By the time they alert drastic and still very dangerous action must be taken.
