It's a strange logic that says give the men a pay cut, the logical move would be regardless of gender, if a person does a specific job then the pay is exactly the same.

You negotiate a contract. You don't just hand over top dollar wages for the same exact job. Say a man worked there 15 years. Does a new hire, woman or not, deserve the same exact salary? Fuck no.
