The accident happened on a curve. That curve was not designed for 79 mph and a former NTSB guy says from the look of the track and the position of the lead locomotive it appears that the train was going to fast for the curve (he thinks it should have been 30mph)

OH DANG! I just looked at map as well and it is quite a curve there! Earlier report said it had been rated for 79mph and train was going 81mph. If he thought it should be 30mph it looks like it was destined to fail trying to repurpose freight line to cut 10min. off regular route!

Just saw the google picture of the overpass....looks like it went from a doulble track line to a single one...track does not appear to be a equal radius on the overpass and also WHERE ARE THE INNER SAFETY RAILS ON THE OVERPASS ?
