@NorahODonnell: It reached 78.5 mph traveling between Seattle and Tukwila. After stopping in Tacoma, it sped up to 81 mph before derailment. Rosenker: It may well have been doing its maximum speed. http://cbsn.ws/2oDNSu5 pic.twitter.com/1xwlMgEtNWShow this thread -
“The locomotive will actually have what they call an event recorder. Very similar to a black box in an aircraft. They will be able to get a lot of data from that particular box when it's finally downloaded,” Rosenker says http://cbsn.ws/2oDNSu5 pic.twitter.com/iCz2poTNZX

I’ve worked track maintenance on an Amtrak line (C&O) in the 80s. When the bosses got in a hurry, they would tell us to spike every other plate so they could run coal trains and finish spiking later. Not saying this happened in WA, but who knows at this point?
-
I don’t know what the standards are in this era of deregulation, but a typical C&O track had two spikes per plate. I’ve forgotten how we spiked Amtrak lines. Any track dogs out there know?pic.twitter.com/rJcKm3auKi

Railroads in the USA are way, way behind in technology. Wooden ties (sleepers) have typically been replaced by hybrid plastic or concrete. Trains are great for transportation, but Wall Street doesn’t like to invest in infrastructure. Cuts into their profits.
-
In Northeast winters it's fun to count how many concrete ties have cracked. Smh. Troubles on
#lirr all year round.

I’d say poor operation or construction, since this was supposedly the inaugural run for this train.
