The solution of "it starts with the parents" is NOT the solution. Experience in my home state of TN, as a child, was that MANY parents encouraged their children to bully anyone different. I submit the solution starts with EDUCATING (or punishing)the PARENTS.

Is there an explanation for this reasoning by parents?

Yes, They don't want their children "contaminated" by people of color, different sexual orientation, different ways of thinking, different haircut, or anything out of their "norm". Remember, in nearby Alabama, the US Senate leader said the best time in America was during slavery

Total reality if you attended schools in Sullivan County, Knox County, or Davidson County Metro in the 1950s and 1960's. A noted, POCKETS of the state... not the entire state. Reality is reality, despite denies. Closing your eyes to it doesn't make it go away, sadly.

I share your frustration. 50 / 60 year old stereotypes simply don’t play into this situation. Bullying is a universal problem; it is not limited to the region. The story that went viral was simply about local / national outreach of well intended people helping a kid in distress.

Bullying in America starts at the top, in the White House, if adults and institutions don't supervise, intervene, and punish bullying then who will do it? Donald Trump has show that a bully is not always punished for their actions.

Children are cruel. Parents need to teach their children at a young age that different is not bad. I always taught my children when they were young that bullying is absolutely not tolerated

Children learn anger from their parents. There were 8 siblings in my family. 3 were not cruel. One is serving life sentence for murdering one woman and trying to kill 2 others. All strangers. God filled me with love.pic.twitter.com/7IvZ85qOok
