It's really sad, but it is NOT the bodega owner's or any other business owner's responsibility to take care of your kids. How about the POLICE take responsibility and do their jobs on the street instead of heckling minorities for delivering papers or sitting poolside.

-
that’s understandable and true, but the owner saw the child being dragged out of the store and the other men using violence, morally how could he do that? if the owner intervened there’s a possibility that junior could still be alive today
-
I am all for being a good samaritan, but I just think it is kinda nuts to think that someone making minimum wage at a bodega should be required to put their life on the line and jump in to gang violence. That is what the police sign up for.
-
you’re 100% right that that’s what the police signed up for, but they wouldn’t have made it in time. the incident did not take long to turn deadly, if the owner should have done something
-
He did, he called the police, twice. It wasn't just one person going after this kid, what was one unarmed, untrained person going to do? Stepping in sounds valiant, but also sounds really dangerous. What if they had a gun? Why is one life more valuable than another?

If the small business owner is required to be a safe haven they must also be required to be armed This Safehaven requirement is no different than putting your life on the line Jumping in on gang violence requires to be armed to the teeth

What a load of crap. This article is so biased against the business owner and not the THUGS that attacked the victim

The New York State Assembly always striving to clear the bar for stupidest legislative body on Earth. Not the thugs who stabbed him, not the police charged with protecting him - no - it's time to criminalize the innocent bystanders.

I was attacked in my local bodega once and the guys who work there jumped the counter and tackled the guy in seconds. In their defense not all bodegas are heartless like this one was.

Seems sad this requires a legislation to “make” people act humane.

The article left out the elements of the law and consequences for violating it. How would it be enforced? How is a store owner supposed to save a person being chased and beaten by 5-10 thugs? Can the clerk use deadly force?

Thats the answer. Create a new law. It seems to solve all of our social ills and has worked so well over time. This is absurd.

Yeah in a city that doesn’t allow fire arms to protect yourself. So when the owner would’ve intervened they would’ve attacked him as well because he had no way to protect himself either.

What does being a ‘Safe Haven’ require from Bodega owners? It is human to help a child in need instead of watch and walk away. So many adults watched this attack and not one bothered to stop and help Junior. The owner of store, the other idiot walking next to owner.
-
The people upstairs watching, commenting and getting video of the attack. The couple passsing by holding hands. How is it possible that not ONE person tried to help Jr. How many people called police or ambulance? Why were two cops just standing around watching Jr Bleed out?
