“Our new government is founded...upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination to the superior race is his natural and normal condition.” -Alexander Stephens, Vice President of the Confederacy 3/21/1861

For the record, I do not support this statement. I am showing that officials in the highest levels of the government of the Confederacy definitely believed that the Civil War was about slavery.

It was about economics. MOney. Not slavery. Although slavery was required to maintain the current economy at the time.
-
Obviously slavery was about money and economics, that's not saying anything at all. And then you contradicted yourself--if slavery was required to maintain wealth, THEN IT WAS ABOUT SLAVERY.

Slavery was a factor, but to say it was THE reason is an oversimplification.
-
No it isn't. Every issue stems from it. States rights (to what?) economic, representation in the US legislature... It isn't like a bunch of people who shared close ties on EVERYTHING else, and weren't subject to hereditary rule (they could vote), said, "Welp, its break up time."
-
For Lincoln it was about preserving the union. PERIOD "If I can preserve the Union by freeing some, NONE, or all of the slaves, I will do that." I'm paraphrasing but that was the point of that particular quote.

I can't speak for Virginia, but I've read Mississippi's declaration of secession. ( my state) And it is very much about slavery. The other issues are mentioned but it is clear that slavery was the key point.

Number of times the word "Slave", "Slavery", "Slaveholding" or "Slaves" is mentioned in the declarations of secession of the following confederate states: Georgia – 35 Missippi – 7 South Carolina – 18 Texas – 22 Virginia - 1 Well. THEY seemed to think it was about slavery.

Slavery was abolished at it's end, so there is that. Don't think that was a random outcome, or side note. None of these idiots are even educated in basic American History, but running for office seems legit to them.
