Acknowledgements are not a replacement for repatriation or political action, but they are useful in forcing settlers to confront the fact that they live on land taken from indigenous people. They are a small, but important step in reversing 500 years of indigenous erasure.

I did land acknowledgment with young women in South Bronx. A mentor I worked with continued that practice in New Orleans where she teaches. A young Indigenous man in her class was a difficult student. When she acknowledged his territory he became engaged. He’s now a star student.

The class were reading about Inuit and sustainability so I Skyped with them a few weeks ago. Jon Jon, the young Houma man, showed me the regalia vest he made and on the back he had his Indigenous name. Then he asked me what mine was 😭♥️✊🏼

They aren't exactly transformative, but they can raise consciousness and set the tone for events. Also, gratitude and recognition don't really cost anything but a bit of effort and mindfulness, so why not?

These “land acknowledgements” are among those safe things that settler society can handle along with other things like beadwork or drumming. But ask them to acknowledge anything that requires they give up the land or share resources or wealth - well THAT will never happen.

@Cole_Metis and I did a bunch of work on Land Acknowledgments when we worked with @ipaaonline. So many thoughts. When are they done? Who are they for? Lots of diverse opinions. Especially when you talk to people on the Rez...

I think that it is important for people to be aware of the territory that we work and live on. But these words are most effective when they are delivered on special occasions and events. e.g. @TIFF_NET and @hotdocs do it pre screening of films during festival season.

I don't want the land acknowledgement to become "wallpaper" and lose their impact and effectiveness because people become indifferent or apathetic. I care about it but I know not everyone feels as I do.

Need to consider the amount of settler territorial acknowledgements/assertions that we carry around in our back pockets, street names etc, and what that accomplishes.

They can set the tone for safer space, be a tool of education & exploration for those who move beyond basics. We can use them to unsettle. I wrote a poem that does that, it calls out each colonial violence in my city. I tell them I’m going to acknowledge colonial violence here:

As a settler w/ nonenrolling caseload of Aboriginal stds as a High School teacher recognitions MUST explicitly include genocidal policies of Cdn state, focus on powerful Indigenous nations of & include concrete systemic reconciliACTION.Anything less is tokenistic and harmful

They are a way for a discussion to happen and for people to talk about where they live and who’s land it is. But if the discussion never happens after, it is just words people say. I always unpack the word Unceeded for people, it means never bought, sold or traded. Think about it
