One of my dear friends, named Maria, who has worked as a nanny and still works with children, and who has pretty significant ADHD, has identified with that song her whole life.

I didn’t KNOW my daughter Maria would have ADHD when she was born, it’s just a happy coincidence. But if she ever became a nun (unlikely), that’s pretty much the nun she would be.

I managed to sneak an oblique reference to this song into my next book, and it is one of my greatest accomplishments

Also, by not viewing her as a “problem to be solved” in the first place, which is not to say I would want her as a roommate

True enough!

yes i think that’s exactly why she was rly suited to looking after kids! most of them really enjoy that kind of energy & i feel like caring for kids requires a lot of improvisation that ADHD brains can handle

I LOVE working with kids because it's constant stimulation. Especially with very young kids, engaging fully with them is all about reacting. Some of that reacting is anticipating, but they're leading the way. You're just supporting and guiding and encouraging their exploration.
