    Consumer data governance-as-a-service is a great business to be in. OneTrust raised $200 million in Series A funding to monetize CCPA readiness. OneTrust's Series A investor? Insight Partners. Insight Partners also invests heavily in the Ad Tech OneTrust specializes in blocking.

    It's in cookie-blocking-as-a-service providers' best interest for us to think they're a permanent solution. But they shouldn't be. They're a stopgap which will cease to achieve more good than harm as organizations cultivate sustainable governance systems managing sensitive data.

    Creepy data tracking is a bubble that is about to burst in wealthier Western, European, and Asian countries. I have a feeling that it may have a longer lifespan elsewhere. Is creepier Ad Tech next? Will we learn something before making the same mistakes?

    With Chrome killing off third-party tracking cookies within two years, what's next? Browser based tracking. If Safari, Edge, Firefox, and other privacy conscious browsers play this right, Chrome will be put in a pretty strange place.

    If you just don't serve third-party tracking cookies, tracking pixels, browser fingerprinting tech, and similar "Ad Tech", you might not need a cookie banner, even if your organization is headquartered in the EU, so long as the rest of your data governance house is in order.

    Regulation of unethical & opaque data collection and use is a wonderful opportunity to improve the digital experience through treating end user data in a manner that is respectful of privacy concerns, transparent, and accountable, without obtrusive theater. I hope we embrace it.

    Does our organization want to personalize? Do we have the governance and processes in place to do so effectively and ethically? We can serve a helpful dialog to users asking if they'd like a personalized experience in a friendly, specific way at the right point in their journey.

    Dipping my toe back into EU data privacy law, I'm pretty confident that cookie consent popups are total bullshit compliance theater for any organization with proper and transparent data and privacy governance in place, if tracking scripts aren't indiscriminately locked & loaded.

    Can anyone point me to where the EU ePrivacy Directive says we need to degrade the user experience of our organization's website with a cookie consent banner in order to be compliant while serving cookies "strictly necessary for the delivery of a service requested by the user"?
