We want to tell Depressed Academics that what they go through isn't fair, or OK. That they have the right to speak up. We want to call out the Condescending Bullies, and end their domination based on unachievable standards and gatekeeping.

We want to comfort Petrified PhD students. You have been sold the dream of a world that isn't as nice and shiny as it looks. We have to change it together. And we want to tell Academic Superstars that their success is great, but that normalising failure is even more important.

We want to change things. We are here to change things. I won't be done until we have made academia a better place.

We are mad. We had enough of this abuse. Enough of "diversity talk" that only benefits the same people. We gave our brains and sometimes lives for academia. You won't take our dreams again. A more compassionate academia is not only possible, is mandatory.

Do you think many of the fifth group actually stay inside academia very often? I've moved between 1 and 5 (partly thanks to 2!) over time, but I'm also no longer officially in academia.

Based on my personal experience, no, but I still work with academics. The fact that this sort of people leaves is a proof of the fact that the system is not as good as it should be. But there are enough of us now, and we have a voice that it's no longer possible to ignore.

YES, exactly. Also: the many academics who go difficulty shouldn't be reduced to fragile beings, rather people who show strength through their vulnerability. It's not fair to reduce people to fragile beings bc of their struggles.

No. But we also have to acknowledge that many people are scared to speak up not to lose their privilege!
