Quick iridescence video. It’s not pigment—it’s refraction of light through the structure of the feathers!

I take a certain pride in getting up close with my local hummingbirds. But I’m learning that, just like improvising in music, you can say something by leaving space. Now how do I get rid of diagonal sticks in the foreground.

I have to confess I don’t always get a good look at what I’m shooting. The nice lighting on this Band-tailed pigeon from last week was a pleasant surprise.

Pretty much the same way I woke up.

There are very strong high winds so I didn’t get to look for birds. So here’s another photo from yesterday.

Anyway, just sharing some thoughts on what I do. Since I first picked up a camera last February 29th, I’ve had some of the most enjoyable and educational experiences of my life.

The main advantage of a lot of flowering plants is a lot of hummingbirds. The main disadvantage is most of the backgrounds are really dense and busy. So when you get pretty good subject isolation, you have to take advantage.

I’ve learned so much about hummingbird behavior through photographing them. One of my favorite behaviors is when they grab onto a leaf for support while feeding. A leaf!

I use small spot center focus. I’ve heard really good things about Sony focus tracking, especially in good light, but have found it can get confused on hummingbirds because it locks onto the plants. The bird is usually the most stable object in the frame!

And be like the hummingbird and give yourself time to rest and recharge.

So you have to be quick! Or just make it a part of your life and you’ll never be bored.

After awhile you get a feel for the way it moves among blooms and can track it fairly easily. You can also see that within the feeding event, there are only a few instances w/the bird in full view, out of shadow, and facing the correct direction.

This is one of my good hummingbird spots where I can get decent feeding shots instantly. Of course it takes longer to get really good ones. The only downside is that the plant smells awful!
