Our paper showing both variation and structure in the meaning of emotions is out today in . We show that words for emotions such as "love," "fear," and "surprise" have different meanings in languages around the world 1/n

8/n: Together, this is some of the first work examining how kids learn the meaning of a novel emotion words and has implications for the development of emotion knowledge and interventions seeking to teach children about emotions

7/n: This was especially the case when kids heard a word in a situational context consistent with feeling an emotion (e.g., the alien lost their puppy and felt "binty;" Study 2)

6/n: Kids then pointed to images of aliens feeling an emotion (e.g., sad), a physical state (e.g., cold) or doing an action (e.g., cartwheeling). We found that age and increasingly restrictive sentence frames prompted emotion choices (Study 1)

5/n: In our studies, kids aged 3-5 heard novel adjectives about an alien character in one of three sentence frames that increased in restrictiveness: the alien is "binty," feels "binty" or feels "binty" about something

4/n: To learn adjectives, kids use the linguistic context the word is heard in to hone in on its meaning. This is called 'syntactic bootstrapping.' So we sought out to see if kids used syntactic bootstrapping for novel emotion words

3/n: But saw give a talk once and wondered "how do kids know that a novel word refers to an emotion in the first place?" Emotions are often adjectives (in English) and it turns out that it is not easy to learn adjectives.

2/n: Lots of research shows that understanding emotion words (e.g., "anger," "sadness") predicts kids emotion understanding, perception, and regulation. Other data shows that kids learn about emotions from conversations with adults

Our latest paper by and shows that emotions become less embodied with increasing age. Adults associate emotions with and report fewer body states (racing heart, sweaty palms) during emotions with increasing age .
