Willie Nash was booked into a Mississippi jail on a misdemeanor & asked a guard if he could charge his cell phone. Instead the guard took the phone, he was charged with having a phone in a correctional facility, convicted & sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Jay-Z and Yo Gotti threaten to sue Mississippi over "inhumane & unconstitutional" prisons. People in the state's prisons "are forced to live in squalor, with rats that crawl over them as they sleep on the floor." And recent violence has left 5 people dead.

We previously reported on the deaths and awful conditions prisoners were being made to live in throughout Mississippi. Despite authorities claiming they were taking action, conditions still haven’t improved in Parchman Prison 🤦‍♂️

Mississippi has one of the highest incarceration rates in the country. Its prisons are plagued by over-crowding, under-staffing, horrendous conditions, and abuse. People are dying due to this mismanagement and neglect. That’s beyond unacceptable.

We have obtained video that corroborates what we reported on Jan. 2nd in our original story on the website. We have been the only outlet to report that Inmates have been moved from unit 29 to Unit 32 - a unit that has been condemned for 10 years. They are sleeping on floors.

NYS Civil Rights Law 50-a also applies to corrections officers in prisons and jails. It contributes greatly to the lack of transparency that exists in “correctional” settings and it definitely needs to be repealed.

  14. We send mail to incarcerated people to gather info about their experiences and to solicit their ideas for solutions. These solutions--like providing families with more opportunities to be together as a family--directly inform the rec's we make through our monitoring.

Advocates say the 2017 death of a prisoner illustrates how New York’s prison system fails to ensure the safety of inmates who might hurt themselves if left alone in a cell.

“I equate [solitary] to the whipping post in slavery...Everybody sees you going to solitary. And once you get there, you don’t see nobody, you don’t hear from nobody. So now you’re paraded and ridiculed in front of the men and then you’re vanished.”

The Correctional Association ( ) is also conducting a monitoring visit at Green Haven today. Prisons need transparency and DOCCS needs to know that people are starting to pay attention. We need a challenge. One time is not enough.
