And coroners investigating cause of death in suspected medical negligence cases are also usually doctors who live and work in the same area as the hospital. And because they're so independent with little oversight there's just no consistency.

In my son’s case consultant said to me while he was still alive ‘he has to die in West Yorkshire as we want the coroner who knows us to investigate his death’.

Awful
In our son's case coroner closed the case a week before the SUI was due. Said myocarditis was not survivable (literature says otherwise). Refused to open an inquest but eventually opened because we had recording of Hospital saying survivable with care.2 replies 3 retweets 1 like -

And then at inquest, allowed the SUI investigator to be crucified for "upsetting" the doctors and nurses with such a critical report (failing to act on a deteriorating neonate with diagnosis of sepsis and showing signs of shock. Panic only when lactate went from to 15.9).

Eurgh. Reminds me of Valerie Murphy's barrister telling me during cross-examination (yes really) that she was upset by my statement. Still makes me feel sick.

I also had sit through watching the consultant's barrister and coroner postulate *in front of us* how we as the family must be very upset at the Hospital for telling us he could have survived when he "clearly" could not have based upon evidence from the doctors responsible.

Shudder. The process and insensitivity is brutal.

Had to stop the coroner's officer mid-sentence from continuing to describe to me the post mortem process (that my baby son's brain would be removed from his head and examined... ). This was the week after he died....why would you volunteer this information...we all know about PM

Horrible ecoetience but because "we don't all know about PMs" - the whole organ retention scandal arose for that very reason Pathologists/Trusts retaining organs for examination after PM were sued and convicted and the law changed to force complete disclosure as part of consent.
