Niggling thought of the day:
Why are doctors saying that this week GMC made patients less safe?
Why were patients still safe when #BawaGarba got convicted of gross negligent manslaughter, but we're not now she's been struck off?
Does loss of career hold more fear than conviction?

Good question & I don't know. Perhaps because the GMC have some responsibility for approving the environments to which junior docs are posted?

No, I don't know either. It seems odd to me that the extreme reaction, doom-filled predictions of the 'death of duty of candour' and warnings of patient safety being at risk have emerged now, rather than after the conviction. Strange dynamic I'm struggling to grasp.

Far more people will know now than just after the conviction.

But why? How did the conviction in itself not cause similar shockwaves? Or the failed appeal? To the lay person, (well.. me), the criminal conviction seems MUCH worse than being struck off the medical register. Regardless of one's view on the GMC/MTPS/High Court aspect.

I agree. But I had not even heard of the original court trial. There was much less news or twitter activity. Obvious really - that piles up over time.

True. More awareness. Also more detail - which means more docs have recognised aspects of their own experience in the case.

I'll be honest, as someone who has followed the medical debate closely on twitter for several years, I'm amazed. Normally, something of this nature is picked up at the earliest stage and analysed to within an inch of its life very widely. Uncharacteristic, hence my confusion.

I believe so? Not sure what other coverage there was, but there was this from 2017 which should've been more than enough to set alarm bells ringing if required.https://twitter.com/c7rky/status/956889953031598080 …
