Doctors have been incentivised to hide their mistakes for a very long time. Ask any whistleblower or NHS complainant. The only threat here is to progress, imho. The scale of 'disaster' is questionable, considering the level of cover ups that still persist.

In theory court & GMC have two separate questions: 1 Did a crime happen at the time? 2 Can this doctor practise safely *now*? GMC is supposed to focus on public protection rather than punishment

Appreciated. Seems they were more motivated here by the question of maintaining public confidence in the medical profession. And they have a point if you take the charge in isolation. But there's more than 1 way of losing public confidence. This case offers several possibilities!
