Good question. I've just heard about something called 'Egress Switch', which I believe this may relate to? I've also heard that emails are 'deleted' (no access) after 6 months, so not quite the audit trail one might hope? Keen to hear more about it, @medConfidential.
Practices may choose to delete data, but they would copy relevant data to permanent record in their clinical system first.
Which may have limitations for circumstances such as raising a complaint? I've seen an email exchange on this subject, where somebody successfully gained agreement to use a hotmail account instead. But I'll be honest - my knowledge on this subject is tiny currently.
Our view is that general purpose emails are inappropriate - difficult to manage the flow and insecure, which creates both IG and clinical safety problems.
