I don't know about comparisons, just that it sounds like he was failed badly.

I've read the appeal document now. http://www.bailii.org/cgi-bin/format.cgi?doc=/ew/cases/EWCA/Crim/2016/1841.html&query=(Bawagarba … - it is catalogue of errors. No suggestion that other children better managed but there is mention of a baby who needed lumbar puncture.

I also don't understand how jury reached conclusion that this was gross negligence from what is described here. By definition there must have been a "risk of death which would be obvious to a reasonable prudent person."https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2738763/ …

Think the reason ppl are afraid, is the culture: leave undertrained & overworked juniors in the deep end without support. Then blame them for their inevitable dangerousness.

She didn't ask the consultant for advice when the consultant was available; she didn't raise concerns.pic.twitter.com/rZICwDkzUy

The consultant got her to write a “reflection” about her role. A subsequent report about his role (and others) wasn’t admitted. Long standing convention is that ‘the boss’ is liable for junior’s mistakes. At least in part.http://www.bmj.com/content/359/bmj.j5534 …

The whole point of the ‘trainee’ system is meant to be that the Powers that Be check on your progress, so you’re not left in charge till you’re competent to handle it.

Ah. I don’t mean on that night. I mean generally- if you still can’t interpret a blood gas and you’re ST6 someone should’ve noticed before leaving you in charge.

I think it's really concerning that in this case there's huge attention because a doctor was found guilty of manslaughter by a jury (even though no-one has read the original case decision, only the appeal), but not the same attention when other children die.

Excellent point. I'm trying to catch up on the detail behind this 'uproar'. Is the original case decision not available at all, or are you saying folk just haven't read it? I'd dearly love to go through that...

I think the original will be available if someone pays to have it transcribed. It's not on Bailii yet. So I think most people haven't read it but have read the appeal.
