Dying patient causes panic when doctors find he has 'Do Not Resuscitate' tattooed across his chest - Mirror...
> Another story that has so much wrong with it. Where to begin, @katemasters67? Even tattooing DNR on his chest was ignored.https://www.google.co.uk/amp/www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/dying-patient-causes-panic-doctors-11623186.amp …

Until... "When his medical records were traced, they confirmed that he had a valid 'Do Not Resuscitate' order in place." But worryingly: "When treatment was withdrawn, his condition deteriorated rapidly and he died during the night". >>Why withdrawn??

>> I hope they're only referring to CPR being ruled out there? Always concerns me that some might conflate DNACPR with DNA-any-treatment-whatsoever.

Yes that still happens. Tattoos are not acceptable, ADRT’s are questioned, the only thing that is undoubted is a DNACPR on the records. Medic led vs patient led.

Didn't know that about tattoos. Live & learn. I suppose thinking about it, if just 1 dumb kid thought it'd make a funny joke as a tattoo...

Exactly.. but when they can’t find the form(!) what would work as a visual indicator? Wrist band?

My dad wore one. He never took his off, but I take your point. Guess we're moving towards an option I'm not fond of here - microchipping. Mini-medical record on a scannable chip? Instant DNACPR confirmation in a 'bleep'?

Maybe bracelets are the best bet, taking personal responsibility isn’t really my issue. It’s how easily it can be ‘removed’ either in an accident or in case of medical error (in the ‘amending the records’ way) I can see microchips being the thing in the future

I do think implanted microchips come with a whole raft of concerns, some of which extend WAY beyond just medical discussion. But it's hard to see a long term alternative. Bracelets are our best bet to avoid them though, I'd say.
