It bothers me that people assume that people always make ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ decisions, that juries always get ALL the relevant evidence, that they fully understand ALL the evidence much of which is placed completely new context that they have never experienced.
-
There are many famous miscarriages of justice, and many more less famous. Not from individual or jury errors, but from over reliance on ‘concrete’ evidence or interpretations of evidence....
-
That’s not to say
#BawaGarba is innocent or guilty, just that there is room for doubt from our perspectives as onlookers with only a fraction of the evidence. And there is no justice served by blind faith in authority or any given system -
Ironically, that's the point I've been making throughout - that the lack of evidence doesn't allow for the certainty of injustice which some claim. Hasn't stopped vocal groups from demanding law change on the back of it though.
-
I'm no fan of our CJS, but I believe the courts are the public's only check/balance re doctors that offers a sniff of true independence. I've no personal interest in the GNM charge, I just object to what I see as the open undermining of the courts/jury system - because it suits.
-
Not because it suits, more because it frustrates, and frightens honest people into feeling they may fall foul also
-
I'm not sure how it frustrates, but I can see first hand how it has frightened. However, the risk to doctors has been overblown imho & I've found some of the claims to be opportunistic/inflammatory. Causing the fear in many ways. Did you catch my exchange of letters with Gordon?
-
Putting aside own opinions whether reactions justified or overblown, etc, it‘s worth acknowledging that reactions have happened, fear exists. and then ask why- far more complicated and deeper-seated than a single case, and influenced by far more than fear of ‘it could be me’

Every now and again this pops up on my feed - and it's still the same arguments going around in circles. So much speculation. Is BG's criminal conviction going to be referred to CCRP? I can see why sanction disproportionate, I can't see gross miscarriage of criminal justice here.
-
It was GMOJ cos convicting BG & nurse without ev. of collusion showed statistical ignorance.https://ripe-tomato.org/2018/02/08/dr-bawa-garba-and-nurse-amaro/ …
-
It's a GMOJ because the numbers say so? It's an interesting line of argument and a fascinating set of stats, but I'm not sure it trumps a jury hearing the evidenced argument from both sides. Does make me realise how little I know about Nurse Amaro's case though, shamefully.
-
Snap, sadly, re nurse Amaro. Not sure jury trumps sense tho'. Brexit ref. was democratic but does it trump sense?
-
The problem for me is you're making an argument on stats alone, but without access to the evidence presented. Could equally indicate it's the stats that are wrong? Perhaps this is just the first time 2 people have been caught? Cover up culture is apparent from all major inquiries
