There has been a tendency to blame the individual, says Prof Williams. Quick question to NHS complainants - did an individual get blamed when you complained? Or did they blame nobody (except perhaps you) and cover it all up? I don't recognise this so-called 'blame culture'.

My complaint was “upheld” & I got an apology. But the “professional” I complained about suffered no consequences, is still practising, & I definitely feel that I am the one being penalised.

You actually did very well to have your complaint upheld and secure an apology. I appreciate it probably doesn't feel like much of a win, but take heart from knowing you've achieved more than most. Lack of individual accountability is a hot topic, I'm afraid.

It took well over a year, lots of persistence & threats to go to the newspapers/Ombudsman

I'm up to over 7 years now (and I'm a relative newbie). I did go to the ombudsman. And the GMC, NHSE, CQC, DoH, Healthwatch, Patients Association, police etc and finally, even the newspapers. It's made no difference. Like I said... you've done well.

There are more shocking tales than ours around tbh. It's an alarmingly slimy scene when you kick over this particular rock.

Is it hopeless? Is our best route just to suck up to the ghastly clinicians who behave like this to try and protect ourselves from worse care?

I feel hopeless right now. My consultant is on holiday. It is 2 weeks till I see him again & I have no hope that he will relent & treat my depression. He is determined that I am BPD & I have no fight left.

Have you sought a 2nd opinion from elsewhere? Sounds like that might be worthy of exploring, given what you've said. MH landing is a minefield tbh. And I'd personally ask to see the evidence which demonstrates a safe & effective track record for any proposed 'treatments' too.
