Of course views all mine. All without prejudice. Just a regular chap after all. Oh...and RT's may equally imply ridicule as endorsement.

Why isn’t there safe space in medicine? Much easier to assign individual blame than it is to examine the system or institutional processes or cultures. Corporate/cultural inertia is a powerful force to push against #ICRE2018 @ChrisWatling3

I think different issues are merging here. And competing. Safe space is a notion that sends chills down my spine. I object to it, given the prevalence of cover ups I know exist in healthcare even without it. It's the opposite of transparency & the wrong fix for the problem, imho.

We should be addressing those who would shift blame, rather than creating a means through which blame can be avoided. And whilst I do agree those behind the 'system' should be held to account, I fear it being abused to avoid individual accountability.https://twitter.com/c7rky/status/1053582542694244352?s=21 …

This is what happens when you allow 'the system' to take the fall. Learn not blame, eh? Guess it comes down to which would make a bigger impact on patient care? IMO that’s the most important?

Agreed, as long as we're taking the long term view. I always say there's a reason ever AA meeting starts with 'Hello my name is.. & I'm an alcoholic'. First step in solving any problem is openly admitting to its existence. Complete transparency has to be our start point, imho.

Do you think that’s doable? Such a huge gap in perception in what happens in healthcare. Agree it has to be transparent: but how do you bridge that gap between what different groups feel is normal or acceptable without some safety?

I say that because Twitter would have me believe that I’m an evil person for continuing to support a system that exists to hurt people. And that doesn’t match what I see from my colleagues. Or maybe we’re all just horrible people working in healthcare. Don’t know

I do hope you've never been made to feel that way by anything I've tweeted to you? Hope not! I don't think everyone working in healthcare is horrible, but I do think the medical world exists in its own 'bubble' which together with secrecy, accounts for much of that perception gap

I honestly believe the world outside of that bubble is starting to come knocking and is determined to bring a little of the public's perspective into the debate, plus strip back the secrecy and curtail the cover ups. An uncomfortable, but necessary step, imho. For all concerned.

I agree. I think there's a growing number of people trying to burst that bubble, sweep away the secrecy, and bring in an open and fresh approach to healthcare - with patients at the centre.
