There has been a tendency to blame the individual, says Prof Williams. Quick question to NHS complainants - did an individual get blamed when you complained? Or did they blame nobody (except perhaps you) and cover it all up? I don't recognise this so-called 'blame culture'.
There are more shocking tales than ours around tbh. It's an alarmingly slimy scene when you kick over this particular rock.

Is it hopeless? Is our best route just to suck up to the ghastly clinicians who behave like this to try and protect ourselves from worse care?

Only you can really decide how best to deal with it in your own situation, but the one thing I can tel you from my personal experience is that learning the rules/laws surrounding consent can have a positive effect sometimes.https://twitter.com/c7rky/status/1052607713862135808?s=21 …

What are the core things about consent you think ppl shld know?

That's a really good question actually. Worthy of more than just a few tweets in reply, but I don't know of any 1 place I can refer you which would cover all that grabbed my attention either. Was planning on starting a blog soon, so perhaps I should cover that? As bullet points:
-
- Understanding the difference between consent & informed consent (criminal vs civil) - Appreciating consent happens in consultation, not on the form (and why) - Appreciating that despite that fact, the form is commonly taken as 'proof' of consent by the courts anyway.
-
- Understanding the right & importance of recording every consultation in order to have an accurate record of the consenting process - Recognising that you should be offered ALL treatment options that are deemed to be 'of overall benefit to the patient', no matter how marginal.
-
- Recognising that what is regarded as being of overall benefit (and what is not) is often merely an opinion - and opinions can vary. So check what wasn't offered and why not. That's a few thoughts off the top of my head, but guess I need to start that blog really?! :)

Good start! Yes write that blog! Thanks for useful tweets
