There has been a tendency to blame the individual, says Prof Williams. Quick question to NHS complainants - did an individual get blamed when you complained? Or did they blame nobody (except perhaps you) and cover it all up? I don't recognise this so-called 'blame culture'.

I don't know any bereaved relatives, raising valid concerns that wanted 'blame'. Responsibility, accountability, learning yes. I met many left reeling after experiencing lack of openness & transparency. I've met many raising valid concerns, who were labelled negatively.

Absolutely agree. The lack of transparency and downright deception can be almost as traumatising as the incident being complained about. Nobody sets out to become a career complainant. Only cover up can create such a thing.

In my humble opinion, raising valid concerns, isn't 'Complaining'. I've not seen anywhere in the Francis reports, where it states bereaved, families, were wrong to speak out. Quite the opposite. It should never have been so very hard, taken so many years to be heard.

It still upsets me to this day that when midstaffs bereaved were campaigning, when it was stated system lost sight of the patient, some sill were so unpleasant to the bereaved. Systemic failings, & highlighting this was seen by some as negative? Staggering really.

I don't think some know how to handle those of us who raise concerns whilst still being supportive of the NHS. Blows their mind. But how hard is it to grasp that we do want a nationalised NHS - just not one that's filled with liars and cover-up artists?

Sorry is not in their DNA. I worked in senior level and when a consultant leans forward at a multidisciplinary team meeting as says, 'in my opinion' .... meeting over and that's it! ... try revisiting or challenging that and see what it does for your career!

Anyone placing themselves in a position beyond challenge, through whatever means, is likely as dangerous as they are delusional, imho. Such people need to be unceremoniously dethroned if patient safety is ever to become a real concept.
