"I believe if we don’t make that small connection with the person, who is becoming a patient, we start on the slippery path to disease centred care". >That is without doubt the best piece I've seen of yours. Right up my street. Excellent read and very much on point - thank you!

For the record, I don't believe in shared decision making. I believe it's my decision and mine alone. A clinician's role is to guide me in that decision using their specialist knowledge. Always more likely we'll defer to 'expertise' in an emergency situation though. Me included.

But so often we Doctors make the decisions ‘You will have these blood tests, these X rays and scans’ with no or little explanation

Doctors hold so much power in the Patient Doctor Consultation that we greatly influence the patient’s decisions

#doctors are powerful so we must never misuse that power and use it always for the#patients benefit and not our benefit. Put an 85y patient with end stage renal failure before 2 renal Physicians, one will persuade patient to have dialysis and the other persuade patient to not have dialysis such is the power of the Doctor We should at least know the power of our position

And then be mindful of that power when it comes to a patient's consent being voluntary? Perhaps this list should explicitly include doctors, rather than just implying it with 'others'? https://www.gmc-uk.org/ethical-guidance/ethical-guidance-for-doctors/consent/part-2-making-decisions-about-investigations-and-treatment#paragraph-41 …pic.twitter.com/3DAlIP0S6h

Absolutely right. That's why the power of MH 'professionals' terrifies me. I only have the luxury of taking my current stance as long as I have capacity. WHOLE other game emerges once you cross over that line, I accept.

I'm so sorry to hear that. Children are another minefield when it comes to consent. I'm a strong advocate for parental rights, but they seem to be relatively meaningless in the current environment. Stuff of my nightmares.
