"Guidelines" are very "take-them-or-leave-them" in ambiance. An oath or something that requires a signature concentrates the mind a bit more. It's solemn. Nice to read though that GMC best practice includes: "take prompt action if you think patient safety is being compromised."

I wouldn't pay too much attention to GMC guidelines, tbh. The lawyers don't, because they're legally unenforceable. And when a case really matters, lawyers are always involved. Hence the call for a stat individual duty of candour, even though GMC guidelines already include one.
