The very high level of public confidence comes from expectation. We expect our doctors to be beyond reproach. We're taught from an early age that you "must do what the doctor says". We know about the Hippocratic oath and expect our doctors to believe what they have sworn to.

Such an important point. Doctors enjoy the 'most trusted profession' label based upon what people are led to believe are the ethical underpinnings in place which require their actions to be beyond reproach. Only when things go wrong do we learn reality can be so different.
